Hi, my name is Mary Smith and I’m from Atlanta, Ga. As a stay at home mom with 3 kids, you learn to be quite resourceful, especially when the only one working in your family is your husband.

So many times, I would see my husband get stressed out over bills and would feel bad that I was contributing financially. Of course being a stay at home mom is a full time job in itself, I still wanted to help.

As a way to try to earn some more income for our household, I decided to see if I could earn some money by baking various foods such as cookies and cakes. I posted and ad on a few internet sites that were for my area.

I had no luck however in this. I love to bake and I know for a fact there are people out there who don’t have the time or the patience to do so. Then, as I was reading the weekly newspaper that my town gives out, I noticed that they have a weekly farmers market. Anyone can go to the market and sell their goods. So, I made up a list of items that I wanted to make and did a great deal of baking the two days before the market.

Baking doesn’t cost a great deal of money. What you need mostly is trays and pans and a good mixer. Patience is needed in baking as well. Rushing to get something done can cause a culinary disaster.

My first week at the market was a little slow but I made about $50. Considering I had only spent $25 for all my ingredients, I profited $25. Week after week I continued to go to the market. As time went by, I started to make more and more money. Eventually I started taking special orders. Today, I make about $1000 a month in sales from the market and special orders.

When going into business, it’s important to persevere, even when things start out slow. It is so easy to get discouraged when you see others making money around you but one mustn’t give up.

I was so blessed to have a grandmother who taught me everything she knew when it came to baking. If it weren’t for those lessons she taught me as a child, I wouldn’t have this thriving business today. I feel that when you start a business, you have to put your heart in it. If it’s something you love, then it’s less difficult to give up on.

Having my own business has giving me a sense of pride. I did this all on my own. I am contributing financially to my household without having to take away time from my family.

I encourage all stay at home moms or anyone else to find something they love and turn it into a business. Though it may be difficult in the beginning, one day you will see positive results.
