Start Cake Business

That’s a fantastic idea! Using a catering trailer as a dedicated space for your cake decorating and baking business can be a practical and flexible solution, but there are a few things you’ll need to consider to ensure it’s all above board and works smoothly. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

1. Check Local Council Regulations

Contact your local council (Fylde Borough Council in your case) to confirm if you’re allowed to park and operate a catering trailer on your driveway for commercial use.
Some councils may have restrictions on running a business from a residential property, including concerns about parking, noise, or waste disposal.

2. Register Your Business and Premises
By law, you need to register your catering trailer as a food business with your local Environmental Health Department at least 28 days before you start trading. Registration is free and straightforward.
Even though the trailer isn’t a permanent building, it will be considered a food premises, so it must meet all food safety and hygiene standards.

3. Ensure the Trailer Meets Hygiene Standards
Your catering trailer must be fitted out to meet food hygiene regulations. This includes:
Easy-to-clean surfaces (walls, floors, and worktops). Handwashing facilities with hot and cold running water.

Proper ventilation and lighting.
Refrigeration and safe storage for ingredients.
A layout that avoids cross-contamination between raw and finished products.

An environmental health officer will inspect your trailer and provide advice or approval.

4. Planning for Power and Water
Decide how you’ll power your trailer. You can use an electric hookup (if available on your driveway), a generator, or a combination of both.
Ensure your trailer has sufficient water storage tanks or consider a direct water supply connection. You’ll need hot water for washing up and handwashing.

5. Waste Management
You’ll need to properly dispose of food waste, packaging, and wastewater. Arrange for a commercial waste collection if needed and make sure your wastewater (e.g., from sinks) is disposed of legally—check with the council for guidelines.

6. Insurance
Get the right insurance for your business. This may include public liability insurance, product liability insurance, and coverage for your trailer and equipment.

7. Neighborhood Considerations
Be mindful of your neighbors. Running a business from home can lead to concerns about noise, smells, or increased traffic. Keeping them informed about your plans can prevent issues.

8. Baking in a Trailer

Ensure the trailer has the right equipment for baking, such as ovens, mixers, and cooling racks. Check that the trailer’s power setup can handle high-energy equipment like ovens without overloading.

9. Marketing Your Cake Business

Once you’re ready, start promoting your business locally and online. Share your creations on social media, create a simple website, and list your business on platforms like Google My Business.

Extra Tips:

Consider the space you’ll need for decorating cakes—make sure your work area is spacious and well-lit.

Keep a clear separation between your personal and business baking equipment and ingredients.
By using a catering trailer, you’ll have the flexibility to run your cake decorating business without being limited by your home kitchen. Plus, as your business grows, you could even take your trailer to events or markets to showcase your creations!

If you’re unsure about any specific requirements, I recommend contacting Fylde Borough Council’s Environmental Health team—they’re there to help. Best of luck with your new venture!
