Hi.

I am thinking of starting a mobile food business. Basically providing lunch to offices, garages anyone really.

So do I need some sort of license as I'll be operating from numerous location such as garages, offices taxi ranks etc.

The food will be prepared at a central kitchen and NOT from the delivery car/van.

Any info appreciated!

Licenses and Approvals For Trading Food Business
by: MobCater

Yes, you’ll need several licenses and approvals to operate a mobile food business in the UK, even if you’re preparing the food at a central kitchen and only delivering it to various locations. Here’s what you need to consider:

1. Food Business Registration
You must register your food business with your local council at least 28 days before trading. This applies to both your central kitchen and your mobile operation. Registration is free and can be done through your local council’s website or via gov.uk.

2. Food Hygiene Rating & Compliance
Your central kitchen will be inspected for food hygiene, and you should aim for a good Food Hygiene Rating (1-5 scale).

Anyone handling food should have Food Hygiene Training, with at least a Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate recommended.

3. Street Trading License (Depends on Locations)
If you stop and sell food in public places (e.g., taxi ranks, outside garages, business parks), you may need a street trading license from each local council where you trade. Some councils allow trading without one if you’re on private land with the owner’s permission.

No license is needed if you’re only delivering pre-ordered food and not selling directly from the van.

4. Permission for Trading on Private Land
If you plan to park on private property (e.g., office car parks, garages), you need written permission from the landowner.

5. Liability Insurance
You’ll need Public Liability Insurance (minimum £5 million cover is recommended) in case of any food-related claims.

If you have staff, Employers’ Liability Insurance is legally required.

6. Vehicle & Business Insurance
Your vehicle must have the correct business use insurance, as standard car insurance won’t cover food delivery or vending.

Some councils may also require a Commercial Waste Disposal agreement.

7. Food Safety & Temperature Control
Since you’re transporting food, you must follow temperature control laws (e.g., keeping hot food above 63°C and cold food below 8°C).

You may need a temperature-controlled vehicle or insulated boxes to comply with food safety regulations.

Summary: Do You Need a License?

Yes – You need to register as a food business and follow food safety laws.

Yes – You may need a street trading license if selling in public spaces (check with councils).

Yes – You need insurance for public liability, vehicle, and business use.

Yes – You need permission from private landowners where you park.

No – If you’re only delivering pre-ordered food and not selling from the van, a street trading license may not be required.

Best of luck, let us know how it goes
