Gas & Electric Certificates

by Debby
(Isle of Wight, UK)

Your story is very inspiring and I'm so glad to have come across it.

We have just purchased a second hand trailer and would like to get the electric and gas checked and certificates in place. However, I'm not sure where we get this done - can you help please?

Thanks
Debby

Get Professional Advice:

In the UK, gas regulations for LPG systems in catering vehicles, such as burger vans, are very specific and must comply with UKLPG Code of Practice 24 Part 3 and Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 (GSIUR). Here's a breakdown:

Compression Joints

General Rule: Compression fittings are generally discouraged for LPG systems in mobile catering units.

Vibration from vehicle movement can loosen compression joints, making them less safe.
Most professionals recommend welded, brazed, or crimped fittings, as they provide a more secure and durable connection.
Exceptions: If compression joints are used:

They must be easily accessible for regular inspection.

Proper support must be provided to minimise movement and strain on the joints.

Pipework Diameter
15mm Pipework:

Yes, 15mm pipework is the most commonly used size for LPG systems in mobile catering.
The pipe size depends on the gas appliances' demand and the length of the pipe run. A gas-safe engineer will calculate the correct size to ensure adequate gas flow and pressure.
Larger or Smaller Pipes:

If your appliances have higher gas demands or if the pipe runs are long, a larger diameter may be needed. A professional gas engineer will assess this.

Legal Requirements

Qualified Installation:

All gas installations in mobile catering units must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer with the appropriate LPG qualification for mobile catering.
Annual Inspection:

Your gas system must be inspected annually and issued with a Gas Safety Certificate (CP44) by a Gas Safe engineer.
Hoses and Connections:

Flexible hoses must be BS EN 1763 approved and kept as short as possible.
Quick-release couplings may be used for appliances that need to be moved for cleaning, but these must also comply with safety standards.
Recommendations

Get Professional Advice: Always consult a Gas Safe registered LPG engineer to ensure your system complies with UK regulations and is safe for use.
Avoid DIY: Incorrect fittings or pipe sizes could lead to dangerous situations or invalidate your insurance.

Gettiing Your Gas and Electric Certificate
by: Anonymous

Hi Debby,

Thanks for your kind comments:

Now with regards to getting the gas and electric certificate, you will need to find a certified LPG engineer (not corgi registered) to come down and check your trailer.

They specialize in LPG equipment and will check all your LPG appliances to make sure that all operate and work safely. You may have to do a search on the net to find one near you or you can try the suggestions below.

For a Corgi registered engineer in your area call 01256 372 300 say you want a number of an engineer who specializes in LPG and Mobile Van/Trailers in your area they should be able to recommend someone locally for you.

With regards to getting your electric checked you should probably try searching for a NICEIC qualified electrician.

Ask explain that you need your eclectic inspected on your catering trailer, which may also include a P.A.T test for small appliances like toasters and kettles if you intend to use them.

Hope this is of some help to you, wishing you every success with your new business

Regards
David
