Hot Water For Mobile Catering

by Darrol James

Hi guys, newbie here.

I am just starting a refurbishment of a catering trailer. Majority of the current equipment is electric and just a gas hob. The only hot water function is an urn which after reading, is not sufficient as hand wash and prep sink facility.

I need a Gas safe cert for the hob but would it be advisable to get another gas fitting for the hot water from LPG as there is already a lot of electric for the trailer anyway?

I’m looking for a cheap hot water solution and not to go over the electric capability.

Any advice would be fantastic!

Many thanks
Darrol

Gas vs Electric for Hot Water
by: MobCater

Since your trailer is already using a lot of electricity, an LPG gas water heater would be a great way to keep your power usage under control. Here’s what you should consider:

- LPG Gas Water Heater (Recommended)

Pros:

Heats water instantly (no waiting like an electric boiler).
Runs on LPG, so it won’t overload your trailer’s electric supply.
Compact & wall-mountable models available.
Can be installed near your sinks for easy access.

Cons:

You’ll need a Gas Safe engineer to install it and certify it.
Requires proper ventilation (most trailers already have this for gas).

Electric Water Heater (Alternative)

Pros:

Easier to install (just plug into a socket or hardwire).
No need for extra LPG fittings.

Cons:

- Uses a lot of power, which might trip your supply.
- Slow heating and limited hot water storage if using a small tank (e.g., 5-10L units).

Some Possible LPG Water Heaters Choices

Morco D61B LPG Water Heater (basic, reliable, but not automatic ignition)
Joolca HOTTAP (portable & easy to install)
Eccotemp L5 or L10 (great for mobile catering setups)

Next Steps for You

Check LPG Regulations – You’ll need a Gas Safe engineer to fit it safely.
Consider Water Pressure Needs – If your trailer has low water pressure, you might need a small pump.

Decide on Placement – Mount near sinks for convenience & ensure good ventilation.
If you need a budget option, a small LPG water heater will be your best bet—cheap to run and easy on your electrical load.

Best of luck
