Do You Need Permission to Trade on an Industrial Estate?
by: David-

Yes, in most cases, you will need permission from the industrial estate owner or management company to operate your food business on their premises. Here’s what you need to consider:

1. Permission from the Industrial Estate Owner
Most industrial estates are privately owned, meaning you cannot just set up and start trading without written permission from the owner or management.

Contact the estate manager or landlord to discuss renting a pitch or setting up on-site. Some estates already have agreements with food vendors, so they may have specific rules.

2. Street Trading Licence (If Selling to the Public)
If your pitch is on private land and you're selling to workers within the estate (with the owner's permission), you might not need a Street
Trading Licence.

However, if your pitch is near a public road or accessible to the general public, your local council may require a Street Trading Licence. Always check with them first.

3. Food Business Registration
You must register your food business with your local council at least 28 days before you start trading. This is free and ensures you meet food hygiene regulations.

You’ll need a Food Hygiene Certificate (Level 2 or higher) and follow food safety guidelines.

4. Insurance & Compliance
Public Liability Insurance is a must to protect you if anything goes wrong.
If using LPG or electrical equipment, ensure it meets safety standards (Gas Safe certified, PAT tested).
Keep your food hygiene rating high, as customers trust businesses with good ratings.

Next Steps

-Contact the industrial estate owner or management company for permission.- Check with your local council if you need a Street Trading Licence.

-Register your food business with the local Environmental Health Department.

-Get insurance and make sure your setup meets health & safety requirements.

Hope this helps, and best of luck with your mobile food business!

How To Contact Landlords of Industrial Estate
by: David

Hello There,

I think the best way to find this information out is to either look for any vacant industrial units on the estate. They will normally display a contact board which will advertise the landlords contact number or website address.

If you can't find any empty units, and there are no TO LET boards scattered around the Industrial estate, you will have to ask one of the trading businesses if they can please supply you with their landlords contact details.

It's then just a matter of asking them if they are willing to rent out a pitch to you. This only really applies if the industrial estate if privately owned. If the industrial estate is council owned you will then have to approach your local council.

Hope this helps and the best of luck.
