Ideas to Move Heavy Generator Mobile Catering

Hello there,

I have a horse box that has been converted into a coffee van. We can either run from electrics or a generator.

The generator we were supplied with (from the sale of the trailer) is a greengear 5kw LPG generator and works great. However it weighs 80kg+. Unfortunately there is no space in the trailer for me to store the generator during transit, it does however fit in my boot.

My other half and I can lift it in and out of our boot, but there will be many times when I either working by myself or with agency staff and there is no way I safely lift the generator out of the boot, on to the floor and vice versa (it has wheels so fine to manoeuvre once on the floor). I also have kia sportage so the boot space is flat.

Is there a secret piece of equipment that can do this? I was thinking of a hydraulic jack but these don't have a large enough base to securely hold the generator.

The base of the generator is 63cm wide and 77cm long (108 with handles).

Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you for your help in advance.

Moving a heavy generator
by: David-

Hi there! Moving a heavy generator safely can be a bit of a puzzle, but there are a few solutions you might consider:

1. Heavy-Duty Appliance Dolly or Trolley
There are strong, purpose-built appliance trolleys available that can handle heavy loads like your 80kg generator. Look for one with:

A wider base to securely support your generator (aim for at least 110cm by 80cm to match or exceed your generator’s dimensions).
Adjustable straps or tie-downs to keep the generator steady during the move.
Wheels that lock, so it doesn’t move unexpectedly when you’re positioning it.

2. Hydraulic Pallet Jack or Lift Table

While a standard hydraulic jack might not have a wide enough base, a hydraulic pallet jack or a portable lift table might work. These are often used in warehouses to move heavy items, and some models come with a wide platform. Make sure the model you choose has a platform that exceeds 108cm in one direction to accommodate the handles.

3. Portable Ramp System

Another option is using a ramp system with a powered trolley or lift. This setup can help you roll the generator from your car’s boot onto the trailer without needing to lift it manually. It might require a bit of space for setup, but it can significantly reduce the strain, especially if you’re working solo.

Tips for Finding the Right Equipment

Check Specialist Suppliers: Look for companies in the UK that specialise in equipment for mobile catering or industrial moving equipment. They often have products designed exactly for these kinds of challenges.

Test Before You Buy: If possible, try out the equipment with your generator to ensure it fits well and is easy to manoeuvre.

Consider Future Needs: If you often work alone or with agency staff, investing in a reliable solution now will save you a lot of hassle later.

I hope one of these options can help you safely and easily move your generator. Good luck with your coffee van, and feel free to ask if you have any more questions!
