How to Get Permission to Trade Outside a Large Supermarket?

by Tee

Hi David,

I have been trading on a street in Blaby for over 2 and half years. I worked part time around my children. I have been moved off the pitch by the county council highways department, apparently due to a hazard caused by passing traffic. They had to put double yellow lines where I was trading due to increase in traffic over time.

I am now struggling to find a pitch. I cater halal food, which is not available within a 3 mile drive of where I live.

There is a large Tesco supermarket down the road from where I live, I’m wondering if it would be possible to trade in the retail parade. Could you please point me in the right direction of who to approach to find out?

Your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Tee

Pitch Near Supermarket ?
by: David

Hi Tee,

Good to hear from you, and I’m very sorry to hear that you’ve lost your catering pitch.

With regards to your questions, you will need to find out who owns the land of this retail parade. Is it council or privately owned?

Once you know this it’s a matter of contacting the land owner and asking for permission to trade. If it’s in close proximity to Tesco’s, this may prove difficult to set up.

Also, how viable will it be for the business with Tesco on your doorstep? It might be better for you to look further afield.

I understand first hand that finding a pitch is difficult, but not impossible you need to keep looking for new opportunities. Other places to look will be in local/national business classified ads, both online and off.

EBay and Gumtree come to mind as they both have people frequently selling their catering pitches, albeit it normally comes with a catering trailer, but it’s still worth looking through.

Also, this post may prove helpful to you as it contains pitch information for both Home Base and B&Q.

I hope you find a pitch soon, best of luck!
David
