Just Starting Out With My Own Catering Trailer...Can You help ?

by stephen
(n ireland)

HI EVERYONE,

Came across this site and it’s been a great help, but I’d like a few questions answered please (below)

I’ve just purchased a catering trailer in which I’m doing up, so far I’ve added a kebab machine (as i feel this could be a real money spinner and haven’t seen many in catering trailers), a fryer , a griddle , bain marie, ( all lpg gas ) along with a fridge and freezer ( electric )

Having give you the outline above please can you answer my questions below

1. For to run the kebab machine, fryer, griddle etc how much gas will I need per week ?

2. What size of generator will i need to use for the lights, fridge, tea urn, freezer (fridge and freezer small ) ?

3, Can I get my certificate i need online instead of having to take a course at college etc ( I’m in N Ireland ) ?

4, Is there and do s and don’ts i might have missed?

5, Can you suggest a name for my trailer (the kebab machine I feel is a big selling point ) ?

Thanks for replying in advance, and look forward to your replies......

Hi Stephen, here are your Question with Answers.

1 For to run the kebab machine, fryer, griddle etc how much gas will I need per week? This will depend on how long your open for and how much cooking you do throughout the day/week. But I would say that a safe bet would be in the region of between 2 - 4 19kg bottles per week.Don't forget some places will deliver the gas to you at your place of work.

2. What size of generator will i need to use for the lights, fridge, tea urn, freezer (fridge and freezer small) Again, this all depends on how long you?re going to run the equipment for and for how many days a week. Saying that a 5, 6 KV generator should be fine. The main drain will be the fridge, freezer and tea earn. With summer around the corner. The lights won?t be used much but the fridge/freezer will be used heavily especially when it starts to get hot.

3, Can I get my certificate i need online instead of having to take a course at college etc ( I'm in N Ireland ) Hi you sure can take the course online, Try the virtual college, they do the New Level 2 Food and Hygiene Course which is required and they also send you a certificate when you complete the course. You will need to display this certificate in your trailer when you start your business.

4, Is there and do s and don'ts i might have missed? You sound like you have everything ready to go, just make sure you also get a fridge temperature gauge,(to maintain the right temp) and a food probe to make sure the food is fully cooked through.Apart from this you seem to have everything under control.

5, Can you suggest a name for my trailer the kebab machine I feel is a big selling point? This is a difficult one and will require some brain power, which I am a bit short on this evening. Tasty Bites, perhaps which is not very original. I suggest you spend a little time thinking it through to make the best choice.

Hope this help you out Stephen. Wishing you the best of luck in starting your business.

Please let us know how it all goes.

David
