Late Demand for 10% of Last Year’s Event

Hello. I did an event last summer over a 4 week period (open 14 days) and in the last few weeks the event organizer has started demanding 10% of the turnover. Nothing of the sorts was agreed before the event. Is this allowed? Thanks

Demand 10% of Your Turnover
by: MobCater

Hello,

Its doubtful that the event organizer can legally demand 10% of your turnover if there was no prior agreement. If there was no written contract or clear terms stating that you owed a percentage of your sales, they have no legal grounds to claim it.

A few key points to consider:

Check Your Agreement – If you signed a contract, review it carefully to see if there is any mention of revenue sharing or additional fees.

Verbal Agreements – If nothing was discussed or agreed upon verbally, they have no right to make a retrospective demand.

Customary Practice – Some events do charge a percentage, but this must always be agreed upon in advance.

Request Proof – Ask them to provide written evidence of the agreement if they insist you owe the money.

Legal Standpoint – In UK contract law, terms must be agreed upon beforehand. A demand made after the event without prior agreement is not enforceable.

Negotiation or Dispute – If they persist, you can politely decline or seek legal advice.

Draft an email/letter you could use the below as a starting point

Re: Event Turnover Request

Dear [Organizer's Name],

I was surprised to receive your request for 10% of my turnover from last summer’s event. At no point before or during the event was this discussed or agreed upon.

As there was no prior agreement regarding a percentage-based fee, I am unable to comply with this request. If you believe otherwise, please provide written evidence of any such agreement.

Best regards,
[Your Name]
