LPG or Electric?

by Paula McCloy

Hi there

I am setting up a new business from a vintage caravan serving a range of cakes and bakes, hot soups/stews, tea, coffee. All food will be prepared off site and the caravan is purely being used as a server. I need to run a small fridge for milk, cream, etc, a coffee perculator, hot water boiler (20l) and a soup kettle. I am really struggling with understanding the best way to go with power. I am aiming the business at both public events and private hire (birthdays, weddings, corporate events) so noise may be an issue. I have a number of questions I hope you can help with:

are low noise generators noisy? What should I be aiming for re purchase
can you purchase LPG fridges for mobile catering? Haven't seen any on line.
can you purchase LPG coffee perculators?
and overall, would you recommend I go down the electric or gas route?

any advice you can give would be really gratefully received.

Gas or Electric Catering Equipment
by: David-

You're starting an exciting business with your vintage caravan, and I’m happy to help guide you through your power options!

1. Are low noise generators noisy?

Low noise generators are definitely quieter than standard ones, but they’re not silent. They’re usually designed to make less noise, often around 50-60 decibels, which is about the same as the sound of normal conversation. While they might not be completely silent, they should be manageable, especially if you’re planning to use them at outdoor events where noise isn’t as much of a concern. However, for private hire events like weddings or corporate functions, noise could be more noticeable, so it’s a good idea to check the decibel level of any generator you're considering.

For quieter options, you can look into inverter generators, which are often more silent, fuel-efficient, and suitable for running delicate equipment like your coffee percolator or fridge. If you're concerned about noise, you could also consider placing the generator further away from your caravan or using a generator box to help reduce sound.

2. Can you purchase LPG fridges for mobile catering?

Yes, LPG fridges do exist, but they can be a little harder to find than regular electric fridges. They are often used in campervans and off-grid settings. They work by running on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) instead of electricity. You might have to search a bit more specifically, but they’re definitely available. A good place to start would be specialist catering suppliers or RV/Caravan supply stores. They can be a good option if you want to avoid using a generator just for refrigeration. However, be aware that LPG fridges tend to be less efficient than electric ones, and you might need to keep an eye on gas levels.

3. Can you purchase LPG coffee percolators?

LPG-powered coffee percolators are less common, but you can find alternatives like gas-powered espresso machines or coffee urns that run on LPG. These are popular for mobile catering setups because they don’t require electricity. Many mobile catering services use gas for cooking equipment (like ovens and grills), so it makes sense to use gas for coffee machines too if you’re looking for a more energy-efficient and independent option. 4. Should you go electric or gas?

Choosing between electric or gas depends on a few factors:

Electric: Easier to manage because it’s a simple plug-in setup. It's great if you're at events with available power sources (like festivals or events with electrical hookups). However, you’ll need a good, quiet generator for events without power, which can add extra noise and maintenance. You'll also be dependent on electricity for your fridge, kettle, etc.

Gas: More independent and often more energy-efficient, especially in a mobile catering environment. Gas is great for cooking and heating water, and it’s often quieter than generators. It’s a good option for when you’re working in more remote locations or where electricity isn’t easily accessible. However, gas does require more careful handling, regular checks, and ensuring you have enough gas for the day.

For a mix of both, many mobile caterers use a combination of electric and gas—gas for the cooking equipment and electric for things like refrigeration, especially in situations where you can plug in or have a generator to support your electric needs.

Summary Recommendations:

For power generation, look into inverter generators (quiet and efficient).
For refrigeration, consider an electric fridge (or an LPG fridge if you prefer gas, but these can be harder to find).

For coffee machines, look for gas-powered machines to reduce reliance on electricity.
A combination of both electric and gas is likely the best solution, with gas for heating and cooking and electric for refrigeration and coffee machines if you have access to power.
I hope this helps!
