My Catering Van Has Been Broken Into

by Tom
(Cornwall)

Just got to work this morning and found my van broken into. The door has been almost ripped off even though I had secure locks on it - am devastated! Drink cans have been taken and a few other things, but I desperately need to know if I can get a replacement door.

I have looked online but cant find anything. If anyone can give me advice where I can get a new door or who I would ask to make up something - I haven't a clue. I shall also need to temporarily cover it until I can make it safe so no-one else can get it. My wife's baby is due today - it couldn't have happened at a worse time!

Catering Van Break In
by: David-

I’m so sorry to hear about what happened, and I can imagine how stressful this must be, especially with everything else going on. Let me help you with some practical steps to get your van secure and back to work as quickly as possible.
1. Temporarily Secure the Van

Until you get the door repaired or replaced, you’ll need to secure it to prevent further damage or theft:

Use Heavy-Duty Plastic Sheeting or Plywood: You can cover the door area with a thick plastic sheet (such as a tarpaulin) or a piece of plywood to seal the gap. Secure it with bungee cords, zip ties, or duct tape.

Check Local Hardware Stores: Stores like Screwfix or B&Q (if you're in the UK) will have these materials.

Consider Hiring a Mobile Locksmith: Some locksmiths specialize in temporary vehicle security and can help make it safe until a permanent fix is in place.

2. Finding a Replacement Door

Finding a replacement door might take a little digging, but here’s where to start:
Check with Van Manufacturers

Contact the manufacturer or dealership for your van (e.g., Ford, Mercedes, Renault). They often have parts available or can order a replacement door for you. Provide your van's make, model, and year to get an exact match.

Auto Salvage Yards

Many salvage or scrapyards stock second-hand parts for vans and might have the exact door you need.

Custom Fabrication

If you can't find a door replacement, speak to local fabricators or welding shops. They may be able to repair the damaged door or create a custom replacement.

3. Contact Mobile Catering Specialists

Since your van is used for mobile catering, there are specialist companies that might help:

Towability, A&R Willis Catering Trailers, or Custom Catering Trailers: These businesses may have parts or advice for securing and repairing catering vehicles.

If your van was custom-fitted, contact the company that did the conversion—they may be able to source or repair the door.

4. Insurance and Financial Help

If you have insurance for your van, contact your provider immediately. They might cover the cost of repairs, replacements, or even temporary loss of income.

If you don’t have insurance, consider asking for quotes from multiple places to find the most affordable repair option.

5. Protect Your Business in the Future

To help prevent this from happening again:

Upgrade Security: Reinforce the locks with deadbolts or invest in a steering wheel lock or GPS tracker.

Park in a Safer Spot: If possible, park in a secure location overnight or install motion-sensor lights and cameras where you park. Stock Less Overnight: Try to avoid leaving valuable items or stock in the van overnight.

Final Thoughts

Take a deep breath and focus on one thing at a time—your van can be fixed, and with a few steps, you’ll be back up and running. Right now, securing your van and finding a replacement door should be the priority. Don’t hesitate to reach out to professionals or friends for help—they’ll want to support you during such a tough time.

Best of luck, and congratulations on the upcoming arrival of your baby! If you need more advice, I’m here to help. 😊
