Running A Freezer On A Trailer Whilst Driving

by Michael
(Leeds)

Hi

I am looking to buy a trailer rather than a van conversion due to cost. With my product being frozen and sometimes travelling large distances to events, is there a way to power the freezer whilst driving?

The vehicle towing the trailer will be a van - is it possible to install another battery in the van and run a cable to the trailer to run it?

I am assuming running a generator in the trailer whilst driving is not permitted.

Hope you can help.

Thanks
Michael

How did it go?
by: Scarlett

Hi Michael,

I find myself in the same situation and fear my ice cream will defrost when the freezer is unplugged to hit the road.

What was your solution in the end? I've looked into battery packs, but my freezer is 13A, so needs to run off mains I think.

Am not able to buy a refrigerated van or any other equipment due to space issues. Any advice gratefully received!

Thanks,
Scarlett

Running A Freezer While Mobile
by: Brian

Hi Michael,

Power can be fed from the van via an inverter and caravan towing hook up but, normal fridges and freezers cannot be used on the move unless specifically designed for that use, as you risk damaging their compressors. Jiffy vans have this type of set-up, but their equipment is specially adapted for mobile trading.

Better to load up and chill at least over night or buy a fridge van.Ice blocks can help moderate the temperature and make sure you are using an outside temperature gauge to keep an eye on the internal fridge temp. It's also worth getting a fridge lock to prevent the door swinging open while in transit.

Best of luck,
Brian
